Probably, due to the recent outbreak of coronavirus people have discovered the ability of vitamin c to boost the immune system and are taking it without caution. Hence, the question “how much of vitamin c is really too much?”.
Vitamin c is a water soluble vitamin which means it dissolves readily in water. The body does not store it and it is therefore flushed out of the body a few hours after it is consumed. Important sources of vitamin c includes: fresh fruits (citrus fruits) and vegetables. It has quite a huge number of roles it plays which ranges from improving growth and development of the body, aiding iron absorption, heal wounds, prevent cold, improves skin look, prevent allergic reactions and many more.
According to healthline, you will have to take about 29 oranges before you can reach the tolerable upper limit for a day ( quite impossible isn’t it?). So, it is nearly impossible for you to get much vitamin C from your diet alone. However, the risk of vitamin c overload is high when people take supplements and it is possible to consume too much of the vitamin in some circumstances. For example, people with conditions that increase the risk of iron overload or people prone to kidney stones.
All adverse effects of vitamin c including diarrhoea, nausea and kidney stones, appear to occur when people take in mega doses greater than 2000mg.If you choose to take vitamin c supplement, it is best to choose one that contains no more than 100% of your daily needs and that’s 90mg per day for men and 75mg per day for women. People who are healthy really do not need to take in large doses of this vitamin.
The bottom line is vitamin c is generally safe for most people. This is especially true, if you get it from food, rather than supplements.
