HOW MUCH OF VITAMIN C IS TOO MUCH?

Probably, due to the recent outbreak of coronavirus people have discovered the ability of vitamin c to boost the immune system and are taking it without caution. Hence, the question “how much of vitamin c is really too much?”.

Vitamin c is a water soluble vitamin which means it dissolves readily in water. The body does not store it and it is therefore flushed out of the body a few hours after it is consumed. Important sources of vitamin c includes: fresh fruits (citrus fruits) and vegetables. It has quite a huge number of roles it plays which ranges from improving growth and development of the body, aiding iron absorption, heal wounds, prevent cold, improves skin look, prevent allergic reactions and many more.

According to healthline, you will have to take about 29 oranges before you can reach the tolerable upper limit for a day ( quite impossible isn’t it?). So, it is nearly impossible for you to get much vitamin C from your diet alone. However, the risk of vitamin c overload is high when people take supplements and it is possible to consume too much of the vitamin in some circumstances. For example, people with conditions that increase the risk of iron overload or people prone to kidney stones.

All adverse effects of vitamin c including diarrhoea, nausea and kidney stones, appear to occur when people take in mega doses greater than 2000mg.If you choose to take vitamin c supplement, it is best to choose one that contains no more than 100% of your daily needs and that’s 90mg per day for men and 75mg per day for women. People who are healthy really do not need to take in large doses of this vitamin.

The bottom line is vitamin c is generally safe for most people. This is especially true, if you get it from food, rather than supplements.

THE PLUMBLINE

One sunny afternoon, shortly after taking a nap, on my soft, silky mattress, I wondered what my next line of action should be, seeing ASUU had refused us entry into classrooms. The incessant strikes were taking their toll on people, with most  students gradually falling into a state of despondency. Refusing to wallow in self-pity, I decided to "catch cruise" onlin e. I grabbed my phone and began searching for inspiring YouTube videos. During this search, I stumbled on a video that featured a famous intellectual, who was both a public speaker and a writer, well-known and respected home and abroad. She was the keynote speaker for the symposium. I was so curious to know what her talk would be about that I glued my eyes to the phone screen.  Throughout the speech, I didn't realize how swiftly time flew by. I was too busy paying attention to her every move and latching onto the flawless flow of her well-construed sentences. ' This is what I'm interested in anyway...

A Story of Medical Innocence

What is life without friends? It's like a world full of darkness. I lost a friend of mine to the cold hands of death on the 15th of October 1995. Pick up a chair and allow me to tell you how it happened.    That fateful morning, my friend Eze, a final year accounting student, was going to read in preparation for his final exams. The exam had started and he had two papers left when calamity struck! It started as a slight headache as he was reading in the library, then it became more serious and he decided to get some painkillers from the medicine store but the quantity he was told to take was too much for him and this guy had high blood pressure (sighs...) he took the drug and that was the end, he d...
